Text Box: Neighbourhood Watch

It is easy to shrug it off and assume that it won’t happen to you or that nothing can be done. In fact, a great deal can be done to prevent crime, but the police cannot do it alone. Each of us has a vital role to play by becoming actively involved in crime prevention. Residents of a community possess a very specialised knowledge of their Neighbourhood Watch even the local “beat bobby” may find hard to achieve. A police officer might not recognise someone in your garden as a stranger but your neighbour would. It is this kind of awareness and willingness to help that is the basis of Neighbourhood Watch.

The number of domestic burglaries has more than halved in the last decade but latest crime figures showed a rise in the number of break-ins, prompting fears the economic slump might fuel a surge in offences.

CRIME UPDATE

Don’t leave your car running

There have been three instances in the past week, (in   Scunthorpe and the rural areas) where residents have been clearing their car windscreens of ice in the morning. The resident has left their car engine running outside whilst they went into their home to collect papers etc.. Whilst inside the house an offender has entered the       vehicle and driven off in it . I know this sounds like a very careless thing to do, but in such circumstances people don't think it will happen to them. DON'TBE CAUGHT OUT. Stay with your vehicle while it is unlocked and the engine running - particularly if parked on the road, there are thieves about looking for such opportunities.

Keep an eye on your belongings

On Friday 3 February, during daylight hours, there was an incident in the College Close area whereby 3 males (a large built driver, a taller dark haired man and a young red haired boy) were seen snooping around residents’ gardens.  The Large one was driving the vehicle, a white flat-bed type   vehicle which had two, what  appeared to be, new-looking bicycles in the back, the other adult was doing the snooping and the lad appeared to be keeping watch. When          challenged by residents, the men became quite  aggressive and verbally abusive and threatening before driving away.  The vehicle may have had the following (part) registration:  YR54 ??? or YT54 ???, and was seen  being driven along Whitton Rd.  It may also have been seen by other villagers.  The police have been informed and did attend.  This was  likely to have been an attempt at metal theft.
